Open Type Cooling Towers

Description

Open type cooling towers are a heat exchanger that takes advantage of direct contact with air to cool water. Heat transfer occurs partly thanks to the heat exchange between air and water, but mainly thanks to the evaporation of a small amount of water that needs to be cooled. This will allow cooling to a temperature lower than the ambient temperature.

Open type cooling towers discharge heat from water-cooled systems into the atmosphere. The hot process water is distributed over a filling package (heat transfer medium) to interface with the air blown by a fan throughout the cooling tower. During this evaporative cooling, a small part of the water evaporates while the remaining process water is cooled.

Why Open Type Water Cooling Towers

Open type cooling towers usually have a higher capacity, can work in series as a group for large projects. The housing is made of steel or stainless steel with special alloy coating. The dimensions of the towers can be customized to suit standard containers or specific project conditions. GRP Engineering is widely used in different areas to cool circulation water for Water Cooling towers, Melting Furnaces, Induction Heaters, Metal Part Production Lines, Hydraulic Stations, Power Generators and other facilities that require large cooling water but do not have much demand for water quality. The initial investment in open towers is lower, but the water consumption rate is higher than in closed-loop cooling towers.

If the tower serves a cooler and debris is not a major issue, open cooling towers usually offer their owners a lower initial cost. They also typically provide cooler water. This is because a large part of the cooling effect from the open cooling tower is the result of evaporative cooling. (Note that the evaporation of one pound of water releases 1,000 BTU into the atmosphere.) Depending on the design conditions of the geographic region, open cooling towers offer a “closer approach”, which is a good thing because this can cool the tower’s effluent closer to the wet bowl temperature.

Outdoor and Indoor Cooling tower differences

While outdoor cooling towers may have a lower initial cost than indoor cooling towers, engineers must remember to factor in any filtration and other equipment that may be required. This is especially important if you’re looking at a water-source heat pump system or any other application that requires a closed-loop system.
