World’s Iron-Steel Export and Turkey’s Iron-Steel Export

Posted in

Steel is an alloy consisting of a combination of iron and carbon materials. Especially in the construction industry, iron and steel products are widely used. In the engineering sector, iron and steel are absolutely necessary materials. In addition, iron and steel are used in the automotive sector, in the production of electrical equipment, in the production of household goods such as refrigerators and dishwashers. Among all production sectors, the iron and steel sector occupies the most central position. It is vital for the continuity of other industries and for the development of the country’s economy. For some industries, iron and steel products are one of the most basic needs. One of the reasons for this is that iron and steel are reusable. Compared to other materials that may be preferred, steel is quite durable. In addition, the shelf life of these substances is extremely long. Due to the reasons mentioned, many countries are in a race to develop their iron and steel industries.

In 2021, the total iron production in the world was approximately 3000 million tons. The amount of steel produced is approximately 1900 million tons. One of the industries with the most competition is the iron and steel industry. Among the targets of the manufacturers, selling outside their own country is at the top of the list. It has been observed that the iron and steel industry has developed as the industries in which iron and steel products are used. For this reason, the competing countries give equal importance to the development of the relevant sectors as well as the iron and steel production. Globally, the construction industry is the industry that uses the most iron and steel products. About 50% of the products are used by the construction industry. The demands of construction and other sectors affect the steel industry in various ways. In this case, it directly concerns the iron and steel industry in the world. For example, steel production has also decreased during the pandemic period when demand was lower.

What are the 6 Regions that Produce the Most Iron and Steel

Steel has a key position for national economies. Iron and steel products are frequently needed in daily life as well as in economies. Iron and steel products are used in almost every area of life. It can be said that a country with a developed steel industry is also developed in some other industries.

Figure 1 shows the world’s 50-year steel production values. In addition, when examined in detail, important events and brief explanations in the 50-year period can be seen.
Considering the world steel production figures, the most important producers are countries and unions such as China, USA, Russia, India and Europe. Below in Figure 1, these values are analyzed one by one.

China

As seen at the beginning of the chart, steel production in China was at very low levels in the 1970s. China’s improvement in the iron and steel industry has been on the rise, especially between 2009 and 2014. In 2020, it produced approximately 1.1 million tons of steel. In 2021, China produced approximately 1200 million tons of steel.

Currently, more than half of global steel production is made in China. Despite the high production, there are various debates about the quality of Chinese steel. It has been determined that the oxidation level of the steel produced in China is higher than the steel produced in the USA. This shows that the rusting time of steel made in China is shorter.

Europe

When a general examination is made on the figure, it is seen that Europe was the leader in world steel production in the 1970s. In the same period, European steel production was 165 mt, while today’s leader China’s production was only 14 mt. The production chart of Europe has progressed in parallel over the years and by 2020, 175 m tons of production has been produced. This production has reduced Europe from first to second in world production.

Japan

It is among the leading countries in the iron and steel industry. More than 80 million tons of steel were produced in Japan in 2020. Japan Future Enterprise Holdings, Nippon Steel, and Kobe Steel are among the industry’s largest companies in the country. Japan is particularly known for its high carbon steel production. This type of steel is quite hard and can hold their shape for a long time. Knives made with steel made in Japan are known for their high quality. Most of the steel produced in Japan is used in the country’s automotive and construction industries.

India

India produced 118 million tons of iron and steel in 2021. Last year’s production amount was 100 million tons. In other words, an increase of 17% was observed in the amount of production compared to the previous year. Orissa, a state in eastern India, is the center of iron and steel production in the country. There are 51 iron and steel production plants in the state. About 20 million tons of steel are produced in Orissa annually.

United States of America

There are about 100 companies in the United States engaged in iron and steel production. In 2021, nearly 90 million tons of steel was produced in the United States. This means that the industry has a value of 110 billion dollars. In 2020, the USA produced approximately 73 million tons of steel. The industry, which was worth 90 billion dollars in 2020, experienced a 20% increase in the next year. The largest iron and steel producing company in the country is Nucor Steel Company. Besides, 80 million tons of steel is recycled every year in the country.

Russia

Russia produced 75 million tons of steel in 2021. Novolipetsk Steel company has become the highest steel production in the same year. In 2021, Novolipetsk Steel company produced 17 million tons of steel. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel is the second largest company in the industry. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel company produced about 13 million tons of iron and steel in the same year. Thus, Russia has taken its place as the 5th most developed country in the iron and steel industry worldwide.

Iron and Steel Imports of World Countries

Despite being the largest producer in the industry, China was the country that imported the most iron and steel in 2020. China imported about 38 million tons of steel in 2020. China’s steel imports include South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Germany. The United States, on the other hand, exported iron and steel mostly from Brazil in 2019. Mexico and Russia are among the other importing countries. Among the European Union countries, Germany is the country that imports the most iron and steel. This situation is closely related to the fact that the country has developed in the automotive sector, where the demand for iron and steel is high.

Iron and Steel Export of World Countries

Iron and steel products are the 10th most exported product globally. In 2019, China became the country that exports the most iron and steel. In 2019, China exported about 88 million tons of steel. In the same year, Russia was the second largest iron and steel exporter. The amount of steel exported by Russia is about half that of China. China’s iron and steel exports include Japan, Germany, Pakistan and Chile. In the same year, the United States exported 7 million tons of iron and steel.

Iron and Steel Production in Turkey

Turkey ranks 7th among the largest iron and steel producers in the world. Especially since 2001, Turkey’s production rate in the sector has started to increase rapidly. In 2018, approximately 38 million tons of iron and steel were produced in our country. In 2021, this number reached 40 million tons.

Turkey’s Iron and Steel Imports

Turkey is also in the top 10 among the countries that import the most iron and steel. In 2017, Turkey imported approximately 14 million tons of iron and steel. Russia, Ukraine and South Korea are among the countries from which Turkey imports.

Turkey’s Iron and Steel Exports

In 2018, Turkey became the 8th largest exporter of iron and steel. In the same year, it exported approximately 20 million tons of iron and steel. Italy is the country that imports the most steel from Turkey. Israel, Belgium and Spain are also on the list.
